The Town of Vail, a premier mountain resort community, is seeking a Senior Plans Examiner/Building Inspector to facilitate the plan review and building inspection process. The Town of Vail is an exciting place to work, with unique and world class projects that engage the most motivated professional. Whether it is a multi-million dollar hospital renovation, residential remodel or a temporary structure for the US Burton Open Snowboarding Competition, the work will include technical review to ensure that drawings for building construction comply with building codes and standards adopted by the town.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Staffs the public counter to provide the highest level of customer service, answering questions in person and on the phone regarding the building plan review and inspection process as well as building code requirements.
  • Performs commercial and residential technical plan reviews to ensure that drawings for building construction complies with building codes and standards adopted by the town.
  • Performs inspections of buildings to verify that the construction is in accordance with the submitted plans, codes, and regulations enforced by the Town of Vail; reviews submitted plans for code compliance, reads / interprets architectural plans and construction drawings and inspects construction activities to assure that it is built in a safe manner and in accordance with the adopted codes, the plans and specifications.
  • Provides advice to construction industry professionals concerning building modifications / corrections, and prepares notices of correction in progress and notifies builders and owners of corrections.
  • Reviews quality of materials and methods of construction; maintains records of inspections and the results, and posts Dangerous Building notices.
  • Answers inquiries and technical questions posed by contractors, engineers, architects, and property owners; investigates complaints and citizen requests on construction; answers questions concerning code interpretation or inspection techniques; assists in the issuance, inspections, case tracking and final resolution of Building Violations and Stop Work notices.
  • Coordinates with others involved in the building design and construction process concerning building plan review and inspections.
  • Demonstrates the ability to complete all assigned tasks within the customer service standards adopted by the Department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Skills / Requirements

Qualified applicants must be customer service minded , solutions oriented and forward thinking. In addition they must meet the following requirements:

 

  • High school diploma and four (4) to ten (10) years experience in construction or in a directly related technical field, or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified by the International Code Council as a Building Plans Examiner.
  • Certified by the International Code Council as a Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector and Plumbing Inspector required.
  • Beyond basic knowledge of the development review, building permit and building plan review processes and procedures and automated permit systems including Project Dox and similar computer software
  • Five (5) years of experience in reading and interpreting architectural and engineering plans and drawings.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and highly technical construction specifications and building codes and standards documents.
  • Previous experience assisting the public and excellent customer service skills required.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and utilize building code knowledge and experience to assist in complex problem solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects within established timeframes and deadlines.

 

Competencies

  • Knowledge of building codes and local ordinances.

  • Knowledge of the intent of building codes and the ability to compare these to alternate methods proposed.
  • Ability to read plans and drawings.
  • Ability to view proposed plans in a preliminary state and utilize knowledge of the Building Code to ascertain compliance.
  • Ability to examine and recommend options for changes to plans to ensure code compliance.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret the purpose of various building codes and exercise professional judgment.

Job Environment:

  • Works extensively with computers, desk phones, electronic plans, cellular phones, calculators, copy machines, printers, and electronic filing systems.
  • Travels to inspection sites in all weather conditions. These sites are typically construction sites at varying stages of completion.
  • Physical requirements include (but are not limited to): Driving, sitting, standing, climbing, crawling, and occasional lifting/pushing/pulling of equipment that may weigh 25 pounds or more.
  • Exposure to noise from construction equipment, to fumes from paint, and to dust from various construction activities.
