The Town of Vail, Colorado is seeking a student or recent graduate to assist town staff with noxious weed and pest management projects throughout the summer of 2018. Tasks associated with this position include: 1) assisting the Noxious Weed Management Program by identifying noxious weed infestations on private and public property and mailing violation letters to private owners; and 2) assisting the Water Quality Improvement Program by observing tree spraying activities throughout town. Additional tasks may include contact with private property owners and town enforcement officials, U.S. Forest Service, CDOT and County weed managers.


This position requires work between May 15th and October 15th to accomplish program goals. The position is limited to approximately 14-16 weeks, 32 hours per week. A flexible schedule may be available during summer months. Normal working hours are Mon-Fri, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

  • Two years coursework in a related field (weed management, forestry, environmental health, natural resource management, rangeland ecology, ecosystem science, environmental horticulture) OR an equivalent of one-year practical experience in a related field.
  • Basic computer knowledge to run word processing, spreadsheet and pdf assembly programs


  • Plant and/or noxious weed identification skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • GPS Trimble Geo7x (or other GPS unit and software)
  • Certified Operator license by Colorado Department of Agriculture
  • GIS knowledge


Job Environment:

  • Frequent travel to residential areas, undeveloped stream tracts and construction sites
  • Ability to walk and climb on steep, rugged hillsides, wooded areas and through dense vegetation
  • Exposure to unfavorable weather conditions may be required
  • Ability to spend 4-8hours in the field everyday.
