The Town of Vail is seeking a new Fleet Manager to replace the current manager who is leaving for retirement after a very sucessful career here! This dynamic department  provides all maintenance and procurement for 160 licensed vehicles, to include Transit buses, Fire trucks, Police vehicles, Snow plows, Heavy equipment, light duty trucks and cars, and over 150 misc. pieces of equipment.

 

The Fleet Manager is responsible for leading, directing, and managing the Fleet Maintenance Division of the PW/Transportation Department to ensure safe and reliable vehicles & equipment for Town of Vail employees for them to provide outstanding municipal services to our guests and community. The manager has eleven direct reports including;  a Fleet Supervisor, a Fleet Purchasing and Admin Specialist, an Autobody Repair Tech, Welder and seven Mechanics.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicates Mission, Vision, and Values that were developed by the PW/Transportation department to promote a culture of high performance.
  • Develops, establishes, and reviews goals and objectives with the Fleet Maintenance team.
  • Develops annual program budget and line item revenues and expenditures.
  • Projects, forecasts, estimates, and reviews program budget and line item revenues and expenditures and develops vehicle/equipment rental rates for user departments.
  • Evaluates capital requests by reviewing needs, historical costs, and future operating costs and budgets for capital equipment/projects.
  • Develops vehicle replacement plan and utilizes the plan to budget for capital vehicle/equipment purchases.
  • Hires fleet staff team members by screening applications, interviewing applicants, testing applicants, checking references.
  • Evaluates fleet staff team members performance and provides feedback.
  • Manages conflicts, coaches, and counsels employees.
  • Investigate customer complaints and resolve issues in a timely manner with the purpose of maintaining customer satisfaction. Develop and analyze customer surveys and identifies and implements corrective measures to ensure quality services.
  • Procures equipment, vehicles, and services through specification writing, bidding procedures, and negotiation with suppliers.
  • Oversee Fuel infrastructure, Operations statutory requirements, and Market trends.
  • Performs inventory management responsibilities by monitoring, purchasing, and expensing the inventory.
  • Performs risk management, monitors vehicle incidents and repairs, and participates on the safety committee.
  • Performs financial administration through implementation and adherence to proper accounting methods/procedures as established by the town policy.
  • Assigns/delegates and oversees work assignments in the Fleet Maintenance division.
  • Serve the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values.
  • Perform job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualified applicants must meet the following requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to lead and manage people.
  • Ability to manage an inventory system.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations.
  • Knowledge of accounting.
  • Ability to budget annually and manage the budget.
  • Specification and contract writing skills.
  • Performance and evaluation skills.
  • Knowledge of computers and software such as cost accounting software, Excel, and Word.
  • Knowledge of work order system.
  • Fuel inventory management skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude - ability to understand vehicle/equipment maintenance.

Education, Experience and Certificates

  • Five to ten years in vehicle maintenance with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Certified Automotive Fleet Manager preferred, or Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist, ability to attain Certified Automotive Fleet Manager required within 2 years.
  • Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in automotive technology and/or heavy duty trucks/equipment preferred.
  • Must have a Colorado drivers license, a Colorado class B CDL with a P2 endorsement is preferred.

Work Environment and Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office in a shop environment.
  • Requires exposure to noise, dust, heat, fumes, and on occasion adverse weather.
  • Drives TOV equipment and vehicles throughout the rocky mountain region in all weather conditions

Physical Demands

  • On occasion, requires physical strength/agility/endurance - repairing vehicles/equipment requires lifting, stooping, bending, and physical exertion.
  • Assists with deliveries of parts and supplies that require ability to lift 75 lbs.
