    The Town of Vail, Colorado, the premier mountain community and international resort, is seeking a highly motivated and service-oriented Assistant Town Manager to join the senior leadership team. The Assistant Town Manager will support the Town Manager in areas of policy, planning, organizational development, budgeting and other matters of administration to advance the town’s mission, vision and values. Acts as a strategic partner on the leadership team integrating functions to support Vail’s mission, vision and values; supports the Town Manager in planning, managing, overseeing, and directing the administrative operations and services to meet Town Council goals and objectives; serves as Acting Town Manager during periods of absence by the Town Manager; directly oversees several departments.


    Key responsibilities and opportunity to make an impact:


    • Assists the Town Manager in overseeing administrative functions of the town; manages, plans, and coordinates major projects as assigned; helps orchestrate community engagement; assists in intergovernmental activities; works directly with Town Manager and Town Council to resolve concerns of Council members and citizens.
    • Directly oversees assigned departments focusing on administrative and communication services (Tentative oversight of the following: Administration/Town Clerk, Communications, Information Technology, Vail Public Library and Economic Development).
    • Develops and implements ideas, policies, and procedures to advance the town’s goals and objectives.
    • Serves as a member of the leadership team; identifies and develops courses of action to respond to a wide variety of community and administrative needs; assists with the preparation of reports and recommendations to Council.
    • Acts as an advisor to the Town Manager and town-wide staff on a wide variety of issues;   communicates, develops and integrates policy direction into day-to-day work as well as into long-term work programs and initiatives; assists the Town Manager in the overall operation of the town.

    Skills / Requirements

    Qualified candidates will have seven to ten years of increasingly responsible experience in a leadership role required, including assignments in a director level role in a public sector or related agency.  Experience in a City Manager’s Office is preferred.


    Position requires:

    • Significant experience in public policy process including community engagement, research and analysis, policy development, and implementation.
    • Project management with hands-on success in overseeing complex and large scale projects/issues in a civic or government setting including financial and budgeting oversight.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and employee population.
    • Expertise in the facilitation of sensitive and highly political situations in a public process including involvement of elected and appointed governing bodies.

    BS/BA degree with a major in Public Administration, or equivalent is required.  Master’s Degree is strongly preferred (or active progress toward a Master’s Degree).
