The Town of Vail Fire and Emergency Services (VFES) is now recruiting for the position of Lateral Firefighter. Firefighters are responsible for providing quality fire suppression, EMS, rescue, fire prevention, and public education to the community and our guests. Duties include but are not limited to extinguishing fires under stressful and hazardous conditions. Additional duties include rescue of endangered victims from vehicles, water, buildings, and the environment (i.e. ice rescue). Job duties also include station maintenance, equipment maintenance, training, and other duties as appropriately assigned. Firefighters frequently perform their duties in stressful situations and hazardous conditions while being exposed to temperature extremes, dirty environments and noisy conditions.  

 

The ideal candidate will function well within the VFES chain of command; possess a high level of moral character, physical fitness, leadership, and professionalism. VFES Firefighters are expected to be life-long learners and have a high level of commitment to safety. Work is performed under the supervision of a Company Officer, with the ideal candidate demonstrating the ability to develop into a supervisory role. 

 

As a public safety agency, VFES has appearance and grooming policies which the Firefighter is required to comply with.

Vail Fire and Emergency Services works a 48/96 schedule which equates to approximately 2920 hours per year.

Pay range $23.12/hr. - $25.51/hr.  (salary grade dependent on experience, qualifications and certifications)

The ideal candidate possesses a high level of professionalism and problem-solving ability, expected to be life-long learners, and have a high level of commitment to safety. The ideal candidate will function well within the chain of command; possess a high level of moral character, physical fitness, leadership and professionalism.

VFES Firefighters are required to successfully complete the Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level (Pack Test) during their introductory period and annually thereafter.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years paid, full-time experience as a firefighter (within the last 12 months) with a career fire service agency (state, county, municipal or special district). Please Note: Academy training does not count toward the two year experience requirement.
  • Colorado Driver's License (within 30 days of hire)
  • Current State of Colorado or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
  • Firefighter I & II (Colorado preferred, if out of state ProBoard or IFSAC required)
  • Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Operations  (ProBoard or IFSAC)
  • Successful completion of comprehensive pre-employment background check, criminal history review, physical fitness/wellness assessment, medical evaluation, drug screen, and psychological evaluation in accordance with the Town of Vail policy and within acceptable Town of Vail background standards.
  • ICS 100/200 
  • NIMS 700/800 
  • S-130, S-190

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to the above):

  • Driver/Operator training
  • S-212
  • Associates Degree in Fire Science Technology/Administration
  • Colorado CDL (If out of state must obtain Colorado DL within 30 days of hire).
  • Swiftwater Rescue Technician
  • Rope Rescue Technician

Employees of VFES are required to maintain a primary residence that provides for a response back to the closest Vail Fire Station within two hours. Response time to a Vail Fire Station is based upon travelling at posted speed limits and roads that are open year-round. VFES also has an appearance policy that candidates should review prior to accepting a position.
