Position Overview

The Town of Vail is now seeking an Environmental Sustainability Intern for Summer 2024

40 Hours per Week

May - August, 2024

Application Deadline: May 3rd, 2024

An environmental sustainability intern supports the goals of the environmental sustainability department through outreach, education, data collection and other projects.

 

Internship Duties:

  • Support Town of Vail’s recycling and waste diversion goals through education and outreach, monitoring, data collection and information gathering.
  • Complete compliance checks related to plastic bag bans at retailers and polystyrene bans at restaurants throughout Vail.
  • Provide Zero Waste programming in collaboration with Sustainability Interns from Walking Mountains Science Center weekly at the Vail Farmer’s Market and occasionally at other special events in Vail. This includes public-facing education and back of the house sorting of waste.
  • Support implementation of residential and business compost programs.
  • Support development of Construction and Demolition Diversion program.
  • Develop print and web-based resources to support sustainability initiatives in Vail.
  • Complete Actively Green recertification process for Town of Vail Community Development building.
  • Collect and track data related to Actively Green certifications.
  • Attend monthly town Green Team meetings.
  • Support sustainable transportation programs including, Sole Power (the county wide green commuting challenge), Bike to Work day, Shift Bike (regional e-bike share program), and E-Bikes for Essentials.
  • Perform education and outreach at special events.
  • Support other sustainability initiatives and programs as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualified applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Interest in a career in environmental sustainability or related field
  • Willingness to learn and grow as the position requires
  • Public Speaking
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Proficiency with office software programs
  • Ability to learn new software and web-based programming
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal ability including professional demeanor with members of the public
  • Ability to walk and carry items over varied terrain in all weather conditions
  • High school diploma and enrollment in undergraduate, degree-seeking program or bachelor’s degree in sustainability, sustainable tourism, or related field.
