Job Type: Full-Time, Year-Round | FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Occasional evening meetings required


About the Role

The Town of Vail is seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Planning Technician to join our Community Development team. This position is the first point of contact for zoning, permitting, and development-related inquiries, and plays a vital role in supporting our planning operations. From reviewing permit applications to assisting customers through the development process, your work will help ensure the thoughtful and efficient growth of our unique mountain community.


What You’ll Do

  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to zoning, building, and permit-related inquiries
  • Assist in the intake and processing of planning applications for compliance and completeness
  • Support applicants by interpreting Town regulations and providing technical assistance with digital submissions
  • Coordinate internal and external plan review processes for Town boards and commissions
  • Prepare reports, meeting agendas, and official records for the Planning and Environmental Commission and Design Review Board
  • Maintain and organize planning records, documents, and correspondence
  • Conduct research on land use policies and perform occasional field visits to verify compliance

Skills / Requirements

What We’re Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in zoning, planning, permitting, construction, or a related field
  • Strong customer service experience, preferably in a government or regulatory setting
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, digital permitting systems, and the ability to learn new software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Construction Management, or a related field
  • ICC Permit Technician Certification (or ability to obtain within one year)
  • Knowledge of Colorado land use laws and GIS systems

This is an in-person position based in Vail, Colorado. You'll work in an office environment with regular interaction with the public and other departments, along with occasional site visits to construction or development projects.
