Are you passionate about inspiring a love of reading and learning in children? Do you thrive in a collaborative and creative environment? The Vail Public Library is seeking a dynamic Children’s Library Technician to support and expand our youth services. Reporting to the Children's Librarian, you’ll play a key role in delivering exceptional service to our youngest patrons and their caregivers. You'll help plan and run engaging story times, craft programs, and our ever-popular summer reading program. You’ll also curate creative book displays, assist with collection maintenance, and serve as a welcoming and knowledgeable presence at our service desk.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Supports the children’s librarian in planning and implementing activities for youth (birth-18) which may include story time, craft programs, and summer reading among others.

  • Creates displays in the children’s area and prepares craft programs and projects.

  • Participates in developing the children’s collection through weeding, shelving and shelf reading.

  • Assists children and caregivers in the use of library resources.

  • Maintains an orderly children’s department by organizing materials, straightening items, and cleaning

  • Represents the library and children’s department through outreach in the community and engages with other libraries, schools, and non-profits.

  • Assists with selecting and setting-up book/item displays based on monthly themes.

  • Participates in weekly rotation of picking up items from the Safeway book drop.

  • Performs no more than 20 designated hours on the Service Desk and fills in for other staff members as needed.

  • Handles a variety of circulation tasks at the Service Desk including, but not limited to, reader’s advisory, reference assistance, providing

  • Vail visitors with local tourist information, processing library card applications, check-ins, check-outs, renewals, processing incoming courier items, processing incoming mail and magazines/newspapers, pulling hold requests and preparing them for transit to other libraries, and processing overdue notices.

  • Assists the public with online databases, internet searching, and digital collections including eBooks.

  • Attends and participates in staff meeting discussions.

  • Completes special projects and tasks when requested.

  • Provides exceptional customer service to all library customers while working at the Service Desk. Handles check-ins, check-outs, renewals, Reader’s Advisory, Reference assistance, and provides Vail visitors and guests with local tourist information, etc.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills / Requirements

In addition they must meet the following requirements:

  • Experience working with children and families in educational or library settings.

  • Knowledge of children’s literature and early literacy principles.

  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit.

  • Familiarity with library systems, databases, and basic technology.

  • Creative, organized, and customer-focused approach to service.

  • High School diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred

  • 1+ year of customer service experience (library experience preferred)

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
