Are you a skilled and motivated public works professional with a passion for leadership and operations? The Town of Vail is seeking a Streets Supervisor (Crew Lead) to join our Streets Division within the Public Works Department.

 

This opportunity is ideal for a dedicated team member who is ready to take the next step in their career, combining hands-on expertise with team management.

 

The Streets Supervisor is a working leader responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Streets Division, supervising crew members, maintaining high standards for performance, safety, and customer service, and ensuring the smooth and efficient maintenance of Vail’s critical infrastructure. This includes pavement maintenance, snow and ice removal, sign maintenance, traffic control, stormwater infrastructure, and landscaped areas across the community.

 

This role requires schedule flexibility, with a rotating seasonal schedule that includes weekend, evening, and on-call shifts, as well as the ability to respond to inclement weather and special event demands.

 

Summer: 5- 8 hours days Wednesday thru Sunday 6:00 am to 2:30pm Wednesday or  Thursday and 1:30pm until 10:00pm   4 10-hour days (Thursday through Sunday) - 11:30am to 10:00pm with schedule changes due to special events May 1st through October 31st.

 

 

Winter: 5 8-hour days – 7:00am to 3:30pm or 3:30am to 12:00pm and be able to call the crew in during a storm from November 1st through April 30th.

Skills / Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or public administration preferred.

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.

  • Minimum 5 years of public works, construction, or related experience.

  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Must pass federally mandated drug and alcohol screenings.

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment including plows, graders, loaders, bulldozers, and backhoes.

Technical & Supervisory Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of street maintenance practices, traffic control standards (MUTCD), storm drainage systems, and safety regulations.

  • Ability to supervise and coordinate daily crew activities, assign work, conduct performance reviews, and foster a team-oriented work environment.

  • Experience training employees in equipment operation and commercial driving license standards.

  • Ability to plan and prioritize work based on weather events, emergencies, and special event logistics.

  • Familiarity with project coordination and budget awareness for materials and staffing.

Administrative & Communication Skills:

  • Ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, with staff, contractors, and the public.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel); ability to learn other software systems.

  • Skilled in conflict resolution, decision-making, and providing outstanding customer service to residents and visitors alike.

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is desired.
