Position Summary:  The Town of Vail is now accepting applications for an Emergency Communications Supervisor. You will find that emergency communications is an exciting career that is fast paced, rewarding & is an essential role in public safety. The Emergency Communications team works closely together in providing critical services to our community!  In this position you will supervise the communications center team, using phone and radio systems, in a high energy environment.  As an Emergency Communications Supervisor, you will make a difference!

 

Our state-of-the-art communication facility is located in Vail, CO and dispatches emergency service calls 24/7 – 365 days a year, for 13 public safety agencies in Eagle County. This very important role ensures community safety utilizing phone and radio systems to support county-wide Police, Fire, and EMS agencies. The Communications Supervisor is responsible for emergency dispatch communications and the supervision of the communications center staff via phone, radio, computer and in person.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs dispatch team in the receiving, analyzing and dispersal of routine and emergency calls for service and emergency operations.
  • Serves as a leader in both the Communications Center and the Vail Police Department.
  • Responsible for maintaining the communication center schedule.
  • Prepares statistical analysis and all recorded records when necessary.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer applications and resource procurement.
  • Performs all activities, duties, challenges, and knowledge required of a Public Safety Communications Dispatcher (see Dispatcher’s Job Description).
  • Serve the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values.
  • Perform job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
  • Follow environmentally-friendly practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Accountability and Decision-Making

  • Serious consequences of error; the emergency communications supervisor must provide information, make split second decisions, and perform duties that may be critical to the life and safety of the public and emergency responders.
  • Exercising independent judgment and/or with a team to perform the core responsibilities as outlined by established guidelines or policies and may seek resources or assistance in matters as needed.
  • Provides day-to-day work direction to peers and serves as a resource for all other employees.
  • The position is fiscally responsible in its role and helps manages the town resources for the future, but does not have direct budget responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of geographical and topographical features of the Town and surrounding area.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Town's and County infrastructures to include all transportation routes, buildings, and residential areas.
  • General knowledge of standard telecommunications equipment used in law enforcement or public safety settings.
  • General knowledge of public safety policies and procedures for responding to emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate precisely with high degree of accuracy and clarity.
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously but firmly under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Calmness and emotional maturity under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to recognize potentially dangerous or hazardous situations based on verbal descriptions.
  • Ability to supervise and lead others.
  • Upper body mobility and finger dexterity sufficient to accomplish essential functions of position.

Education, Experience and Certificates

  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, two years experience in public safety telecommunications work.
  • Valid CCIC Operator Service Number (OSN).
  • EMD and CPR certifications.
  • APCO/NENA Certified Training Officer Certification preferred
  • Prefer supervisory experience.
