The Town of Vail is now hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator II

 

Hiring Range: $30.58 - $38.23 per hour

Full Salary Range: $30.58 - $45.88 per hour

 

 

The Town of Vail is now hiring a motivated & experienced Heavy Equipment Operator II.  Responsibilities include operation of a variety of light, medium, and heavy weight public works vehicles and equipment to perform street construction and repair, structure construction and snow removal.  During the winter season this position focuses on snowplowing and snow removal with a loader.  This requires a regular call in schedule, early mornings and day shifts.  In addition, the position may be assigned to any functional area in Public Works as needed on a daily basis.  

 

Heavy Equipment Operator II duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Performs skilled work in operating heavy equipment, which will include a snow plows, as well as various motor graders, bulldozers, backhoes, front-end loaders, trucks with trailers, and other related equipment 
  • Must be available for callout, overtime, holidays/shift/schedule changes, and 24 hour emergency response.  
  • Snow plowing, sanding/deicing, snow hauling, blowing snow, cutting snow-pack.  
  • Maintain the cleanness of Vail Village, Lionshead Mall, & Bus Routes and stops. 
  • Inspects equipment before use to ensure necessary repairs are made. 
  • Inspects job sites for possible hazards. 
  • Traffic control  
  • Asphalt, concrete, masonry, brick pavers repairs. 
  • Christmas decorating/de/decorating  
  • Pavement markings, sign maintenance, and fabrication.       
  • High water checks and response. 
  • Vehicle maintenance includes tire chains rebuilding, greasing equipment, cutting edges, and all other types of minor repairs. Ability to solve problems and be mechanically inclined. 
  • Haul materials and equipment with  tandem/end dump or lowboy 
  • Clean culverts/shoulder grading ditches, bike path maintenance, and all road maintenance.  
  • Mechanical street sweeping. 
  • Assist with Special Events including installation /removal of banners/flags.  
  • Tree cutting/removal and operating chipper.                                      
  • Serve the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values. 
  • Perform job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices. 
  • Follow environmentally-friendly practices. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Skills / Requirements

Qualified applicants must be self motivated and have the ability to work individually without direct supervision to accomplish multiple tasks. 

 

In addition they must meet the following requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two years’ operating a loader, plowing, cutting pack, loading trucks, and learning how to operate a large snow  blower
  • Working knowledge in multiple areas of public works operations (IE: road construction, heavy equipment operations, trash removal, drainage maintenance, sign fabrication, special events, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience in safely operating loaders, backhoes, dump trucks and all pieces of equipment from small hand tools to the large pieces of equipment.
  • Flexible schedule; including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Experience working with the public. 
  • Commercial Driver’s License with good driving record required.

**Position has exposure to the outdoors in all weather conditions and all types of equipment noise, traffic, chemicals and fumes.  Stooping, standing, kneeling and lifting is required the entire shift**
