The Town of Vail is hiring a Police Sergeant. The Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising, directing and evaluating personnel and resources in order to achieve law enforcement and department goals; to act as watch commander in the absence of the Operations Commander; to respond to calls for service; to perform a variety of functions in support of both the Operations and Administrative Commanders

 

 

The duties of a Police Sergeant include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise, lead, mentor and evaluate employees on a daily basis.
  • Recommend policy and procedure guidelines for police department employees.
  • Assess and evaluate problems, conflicts, priorities, etc. and implement solutions (problem solving).
  • Ensure police department employees adhere to department policy and procedures, as well as state and federal laws
  • Act as a patrol officer and performs patrol-related duties, including responding to calls for service, citizen assists, assist officers, dispatch, respond to criminal reports, etc.
  • Respond to critical/emergency situations and assume command and control of such incidents.
  • Complete administrative investigations regarding violations of department policy as needed.
  • Evaluate and approve various written documentation in relation to police work, including incident, accident, arrest and supplemental reports, completed by employees.
  • Review body worn and in-car camera video to ensure adherence to policy and procedure.
  • Regularly complete planning documents for various events, such as sporting events and holiday celebrations, and frequently assume one of various command roles during those events.
  • Assemble work schedules and evaluate scheduling options to ensure effectiveness.
  • Maintain required staffing levels and make adjustments to schedules for training and vacation absences as well as sick or injured officers, often on very short notice.
  • Exercise responsibilities in specified areas of expertise.
  • Manage budgets and purchase equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain records.
  • Communicate with employees, supervisors, other Town of Vail agencies, etc. Perhaps the most important aspect of the position.
  • Is responsible for complying with all Town of Vail safety and health policies, practices, and procedures that prevent and mitigate human economic losses arising from accidental causes and adverse occupational and environmental health exposures.
  • Conduct quarterly and annual evaluations of officers and code enforcement officers.
  • Accept and investigate all complaints and concerns from guests regarding interactions with officers.
  • Serve the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values.
  • Perform job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
  • Follow environmentally-friendly practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Certificates

  • State of Colorado P.O.S.T Certified
  • Four years of police experience.
  • Highly Successful evaluation or above for the past two evaluation periods and currently in good standing with the department.
