Position Overview

The Town of Vail is now hiring a Street & Parks Superintendent

The Street Superintendent plays a key leadership role within the Town of Vail’s Public Works Department, overseeing both the Streets and Parks Divisions. This position is responsible for leading, organizing, and mentoring a high-performing team while ensuring the maintenance and operation of the Town’s critical infrastructure and public spaces.

 

Key responsibilities include the management of snow and ice removal, pavement maintenance, storm drainage systems, signage and traffic control, landscaping, parks, flower beds, bike and pedestrian paths, and other community assets. The Street Superintendent manages operational and capital budgets, oversees equipment and maintenance programs, ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards, and maintains strong communication with employees, residents, contractors, and the public.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence, accountability, and teamwork in support of the Town’s mission to provide safe, essential, and enduring services and infrastructure that enhance Vail’s economic, environmental, and social well-being.

Skills / Requirements

 

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED required.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in public works, construction, or maintenance operations.

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of supervisory experience preferred.

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within three months of hire.

  • Must be able to pass federally mandated drug and alcohol testing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of snow and ice removal, pavement management, and parks and grounds maintenance operations.

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

  • Proven ability to manage complex budgets and capital improvement projects.

  • Familiarity with MUTCD standards, safety principles, and environmental regulations.

  • Ability to analyze problems, evaluate solutions, and implement improvements effectively.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to learn Town-specific software systems.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster collaboration and a positive team culture.

  • Willingness to respond to emergencies and work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
