Firefighters are responsible for providing quality fire suppression, EMS, rescue, fire prevention, and public education to the community and our guests. Duties include but are not limited to extinguishing fires under stressful and hazardous conditions. Additional duties include rescue of endangered victims from vehicles, water, buildings, and the environment (i.e. ice rescue). Job duties also include station maintenance, equipment maintenance, training, and other duties as appropriately assigned. Firefighters frequently perform their duties in stressful situations and hazardous conditions while being exposed to temperature extremes, dirty environments and noisy conditions.     New firefighters are expected to complete S-212 within 24 months of hire, and perform the role of acting Engineer as needed.  The ideal candidate will function well within the VFES chain of command; possess a high level of moral character, physical fitness, leadership, and professionalism. VFES Firefighters are expected to be life-long learners and have a high level of commitment to safety. Work is performed under the supervision of a Company Officer, with the ideal candidate demonstrating the ability to develop into a supervisory role.   VFES Firefighters are required to successfully complete the Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level (Pack Test)  during their introductory period and annually thereafter.   As a public safety agency, VFES has appearance and grooming policies which the Firefighter is required to comply with.     Images of VFES can be found on the Vail Fire Facebook Page.   Vail Fire and Emergency Services works a 48/96 schedule which equates to approximately 2920 hours per year. As a member of the Vail Police Department they will perform the duties of a sworn law enforcement officer, as designated by the command staff under the Chief of Police. This position is responsible for enforcing laws and ordinances set by the State of Colorado and Town of Vail. Work involves prevention, detection and investigation of accident and criminal activities, security and safety of prisoners, protection for the public and maintaining law and order. Emergency communications is an exciting career that is fast paced, very rewarding & is an essential role in public safety. By providing critical services to the community, as an Emergency Communications Specialist, you can make a difference!   Our state-of-the-art communication facility is located in Vail, CO and dispatches emergency service calls 24/7 – 365 days a year, for 13 public safety agencies in Eagle County. This very important role ensures community safety utilizing phone and radio systems to support county-wide Police, Fire, and EMS agencies. To find out more about the Vail Public Safety Communications Center please visit their website.     Emergency Communications Specialist duties include, but are not limited to: - Receiving, analyzing & prioritizing 911 calls as well as non-emergent phone calls for Police, Fire, and EMS service. - Performing Emergency Medical Dispatch when appropriate and giving lifesaving instructions over the phone to callers. - Effectively utilizing a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system to prioritize calls, record incident details & identify the status and location of responders in the field. - Distributing calls for service for Police, Fire & Medical units according to guidelines. - Monitoring radio traffic for Police, Fire & Medical units. - Access a secure, nationwide database to look up confidential records for responders, including driver and vehicle registration statuses & warrants. - Sending emergency alerts to the public.
